The City of Lamezia Terme is born in 1968 with the union of three communities: Nicastro, Sambiase and Sant’Eufemia. The current name recalls the presence on this territory of sulfurous thermal spring waters used from Antiquity to our days. The city is in the center of Tyrrhenian Calabria, close to the Gulf of Sant' Eufemia, where the distance between the Ionienne and the Tyrrhenian Sea is the shortest. The particular urban genesis gave to Lamezia Terme an original polycentric structure, with an alternation of historical centers and more modern districts intersected with agricultural spaces.
This space occupied from the period of Antique Greece, still keeps the traces of this occupation. Its ground provides one of the most beautiful parts of the numismatic department of British Museum.
Placed at the center of Mediterranean Sea, at the crossroads of many civilizations from Antiquity to the Rebirth, Lamezia Terme testifies by its heritage to the vicissitudes of the History.
Thus, in this city, can be seen a Byzantine Abbey, a castle of the Souabe period, a Bastion of the Aragonese period built in 1550 by the order of Saint john of Jerusalem' Knights.
In short, fruit of a particularly rich history, the heritage of this city of Calabria is quite as various as remarkable.
From a nature point of view, the city is also very rich, since it has one of the vastest botanical gardens of Europe and the very close natural reserve to Mitoio, due to the presence of thermal springs.
Many activities are thus proposed to the visitors, between heritage, nature and well-being Lamezia Terme will be able to satisfy you.
In addition, Lamezia Terme has an important international airport with roads infrastructure and a traffic of more than 672.000 passengers.
Lastly, the city has been connected by the European high ways E45 and E848.
