Esztergom is said to be the cradle of the State and of Hungarian Christianity.
This city is situated at 75 kms to the North-West of Budapest, The greatest Hungarian king, Szent István I (St Etienne I.), founder of the country, was born here. The first seat of the kings and churches was also established here, in the 11th century.
Today the city is the seat of the archbishop of Esztergom who is the chief of the Catholic Church in Hungary.
The symbol of the city is the Basilica, built on top if the fortress (Várhegy). It is the biggest church in Hungary and it was rebuilt in the 19th century with a classicist style. The altar’s painting is one of the biggest in the world.
The chapel Bakócz, made of red marble, is a pearl of the renaissance architecture in Hungary. It is 3 years older than the cathedral it self.
The inestimable value artifacts of the treasure of the Cathedral amongst the 400 pieces of gold and textile, are the gothic chasubles, the chalice and of Suky and the martyrdom of King Mathias.
In the well-preserved rooms of the Kings’ palace, near to the Basilica, the visitor can find the museum of the fortress with the “St Etienne“ room and the Kings’ chapel.
