Lovely Hungarian city counting 86 000 inhabitants, Szombathely is situated in the Region of Vas, very close form the Austrian border.
Szombathely is one of the oldest cities in Hungary. It dates from the roman period of which numerous vestiges remain. At that time it was called Savaria and it was the place of birth of Saint Martin of Tours. Every year at the end of August, the citizens of Szombathely celebrate this glorious past in an important carnival.
There is a very rich heritage in Szombathely:
- the antique heritage with the remaining of the city of Savaria, which is now located underneath the city centre. The « ruins garden » situated behind the baroque cathedral constituting a true open-air museum.
- the ruins of the medieval cities with its castle, which was located in the recent district of the Episcopal Palace, the two medieval churches (Franciscan church, Saint Martin church) that moved a lot from the modern time.
- the baroque ensemble of Szombathely characterised by the cathedral, the Episcopal palace, the seminar, the building of the county council and Szily street. A good part of the baroque heritage was seriously damage during the bombing of the 4 March 1945. The municipality and the county council of Vas made great efforts for the conservation and the restoration of historic monuments and buildings. Thanks to this cooperation now the Berzsenyi square is one of the most beautiful baroque squares of central Europe.
- the great library of the dioceses is also very prestigious monument. It hosts rich funds made of manuscripts (among which a manuscript of Napoleon sent to the 2nd Bishop of Szombathely).
- the city of Szombathely knew a prosperous time at the end of the XIX century. The city was nicknamed the ‘queen of the West’ of the ‘little Paris in the Perint’s bank’. A great part of the heritage of this period (the former city hall, the theatre…) was devastated during bombings of the 2nd World war.
