Pécs, the most southern city of the Hungarian “Mediterranean” has been for 2000 years the native land of cultures and arts. It is known in Europe for the richness of its artistic life, its festivals, is museums and historic monuments as well as for its university and its scientific workshops.
After the capital (Budapest), Pécs is the city where one can find the broadest choice of permanent and temporary exhibitions. The tourists can visit 17 museums (Victor Vasarely, Contemporary art, of Applied art, Ethnography…) 19 art gallery, numerous inscribed monuments (churches, palaces, public buildings, houses) and sculptures from all ages in the streets and squares of the city.
The district of the cathedral is the greatest early Christian archeological site (4th century), inscribed in November 30th, 2000 on the List of the UNESCO’s World heritage.
Since the Middle Ages, the city has kept the structure of the network of the streets in the historical centre surrounded by walls.
The Turkish occupation, which lasted 150 years between the 15th and 17th centuries, marked the image of Pécs. A monumental mosque from the XVI century is still standing on the main square of the city.
The Renaissance and baroque time also enriched the city with remarkable palaces made of cut stones.
Lastly, in 19th and 20th centuries, the decorative construction ceramics of the famous Zsolnay factory contributed to the enrichment of the so particular environment of the city. Today, Pécs has become one of the exemplary centers of contemporary architecture.
This is why Pécs was chosen by the European Union to be one of the “European Capitals of the Culture” of 2010.
