Vienne, city of Art & History
Southward, 30 Kms of highway (A7) separate the city of Lyon from the city of Vienne.
The Rhone River and the hills around constitute the original site of Vienne, which is one of the oldest cities of the area. If you climb up on the Mont Pipet you will be able to observe from this natural belvedere a very nice panorama of the city, wih the Rhone River (which has its own festival in Vienne on June 19th to 21st), the slopes covered with prestigious vineyards (Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Vins de Vienne et de seyssuel, …), the roman theatre and on the other bank of the River, Southward, the Pilat mountain in the heart of a natural park (guides and maps for trekking are available at the tourist office).
The Roman Empire (1st century bC till 3rd century aC ) marked the city of Vienne. There is a huge archaeological heritage amongst the richest in France. The most important pieces are visible in the Archaeological museum of St Romain en Gal/Vienne.
The richness and the diversity of the History of the city enabled it to be awarded by the national brand “city of Art and History” and makes it a city where people can wander in the historic centre where the ruins of the past are integrated to the commercial and intense cultural life of the city.
The Roman Cloister Saint André le bas host all along the year exhibitions of arts, photography and archaeology…
In the tourist office of Vienne you will be offered guided tours (cathedral, cloister, churches, antique theatre, museums.., thematic visits…) and organized trips (natural park, vineyards…) according to your wishes.
